Used properly, it is my experience that they work pretty well. My son-in-law, former Marine, says that you can also dig a shallow hole, pour the water into the heater, fold the top real tight, place it in the hole, and then cover it with dirt. In a little while you will get a nice "explosion,", the dirt on top of the heater flying a little way into the air...
