Cormack MacCarthy's "The Road", because at the end the father realizes his child will make it, and he can finally just go ahead and die.
This was memorably the most depressing book I ever read. I'm not sure I can recommend it in this context.
LOL... You're right, it's not exactly light reading. I liked the movie, too - probably more than the book itself, because its sparse prose style didn't quite click with me. The movie though... has to be one of my favorites, at least in its particular genre.
