Maybe there is a lack of decent films being made by Hollywood with directors such as Sidney Lumet (such as '12 Angry men' and the 'The Hill') at the moment and folks are just left watching 'Fast and Furious' sequels. Perhaps this is a driver for the public appetite for this kind of vicarious murder/mystery sensationalism.
