My primary means of navigating (on land) is a topo map and terrain feature recognition. On those times when I have counted paces, I have been agreeably surprised at how accurate the technique has been.

I seem to remember that there were procedures for dropping paces or adding paces when going uphill or downhill. Do you know anything about that?

Inquiring minds want to know - why do they call it "dead reckoning?" Sounds kind of ominous......
