I too would look towards a .22 before considering this route. In an unarmed survival situation I believe that I could accomplish this humanely with a snared rabbit, but never with a pet. The risk of not being successful on the first attempt and causing pain to an animal that loved me unconditionally is not something I'd be willing to risk.

I had to put down two little doggies in my life, and both were in my lap with me crying my eyes out. Of all the difficult things that I've had to endure throughout my life, putting a suffering pet to sleep ranks at the top of the list.
