In my readings the difference between a pike and a spear are length, not fighting styles. Pikes typically running 15 to 20 feet in length and more popular post dark ages when typical fighting formations consisted of the sheild wall front. Second and third ranks tending to be pole arms for dispatching the enemies sheild men. Among the pole arm weilding ranks were two handed swordmen, primarily to hack the hafts of the enemies pikes. The rear ranks were the pikemen. Extra long spears that would reach deep into enemy formations to kill the pikemen who were trying to kill your sheildmen who were keeping you safe laugh. This was pretty much standard formations for the swiss and german landsknechts of the 1500's.
