My question:
Has anybody started fatwood with a fero rod ? I have cut it real thin with my knife, I have also taken fatwood from a larger stick with a file into a bunch of sawdust, no glory.

I still can't get a spark to stick and burn.

What am I doing wrong???

If you run the edge of your blade at a 90 degrees to the wood you will make shavings/dust. If you make enough dust it will catch a spark. You ned to get real close and pull the ferro rod away from the striker instead of pushing the striker away forward which often snuffs out any spark as the striker hits the tinder.

What ferro rod do you have? The BSA Hotspark and the Light My Fire (Swedish) work no problem

I use the back of my knife at a 90 degree angle. That works fine too and you end up with a pile of "maya dust."

Check out this link.
