I am wondering what "the" ammunition is for .32 cal revolver. I remember it was a silvertip something or other.

But which .32? Is it a 32-20, .32 special or .32 magnum? And who is the recipient; aka the shootee vs the shooter, pagan biker, Bart the Bear or charging paper targets @ 25'? Small calibers are usefull for small game hunting. For a defensive handgun we are looking at superb accuracy coupled with little recoil for rapid firing. The Winchester/Olin Silvertip hollowpoints give reliable expansion, but will fail to expand if encountering sufficinet clothing to plug the cavity. A solid will have slightly better penetration. If your harvesting a tree for firewood the reduced tissue damage will deliver more useable wood.

You forgot .32 S&W and .32 S&W long, or maybe .32 long colt. the only available ammo for them is lead round nose. As for anything being "THE" ammo for any caliber, ask ten different gun nuts and we (I'm one) will give you ten different answers usually with semi valid reasons for each. In my oppinion the best ammo is first reliable, and second accurate. Everything else is secondary. As for Winchester Silvertips the only .32 they are available in is .32 ACP (automatic colt pistol)and not revolver ammo. There was talk that they were going to load .32 magnum with them but I don't believe it ever happened.

Well, the gun is an old Harrington & Richardson break-barrel revolver. I slipped a .32 caliber bullet in it and it seemed to fit right. I guess I should take the gun to a gunsmith and have it checked out for safety and to find out what ammo it takes and is best for it. Thanks for your comments.

It could be .32 H&R Magnum. Is the caliber stamped on the firearm anywhere?

STOP! Before doing anything else, find out the caliber of the gun. Using ammunition that "fits", but is othewise not what the gun is designed for could be disastrous. The caliber should be stamped somewhere on the gun. If you can't find it, by all means, take it to a gunsmith or gun shop and have them tell you.

Also, if you're not that familiar with firearms, I recommend taking a safety class.
