I figure most of us are outdoorsy type folks. I know there are a few who own GPS's. Just wondering how many members actually geocache on a fairly regular basis. As this is usually why I am outside (a great excuse to get out regularly, and see places I never knew about), I'd like to see how many others use this activity to get outside. Post away! And, for those who've never heard of it, and/or are interested in it, check it out at www.geocaching.com (mods, feel free to remove the link if its inappropriate).

Hey oldsoldier.Glad to see another cacher in here. went out yesterday and found one and located the area of another. Was going to take the mules and ride in to it today but weather turned bad. I'm another one of those old soldiers too. 52-59. What area are you in?

Can't call myself regular, but used to to if at "home" in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mtns of CA. We are currently hanging out in a state park which is set at a old army fort dating from the WWI era. Just loaded the location of four caches within the park, gonna look for them probably Sunday (unless it snows again)...

I go geocaching too. Recently I havenīt been caching too much. A lot of the new caches are urban caches in high traffic areas or mysteries which require too much work on the computer. As I want to be outdoors, I prefer traditionals. The urban caches promise to much "fun" with the authorities ( like "Officer, Iīm only looking for some Tupperware. The kindergarten is not the reason why Iīm here." or "Officer, I swear this pipe is not a bomb and I didnīt place it."). In the vicinity a cleverly placed cache was visited by a bomb squad last year.

Well, I'm not truly old old...just older than most of the kids I served with. Active duty from 88-91, national gurad till 96, took a break, went back national guard from 99-04, am out for good now. Spent all that time as 11B. In reply to others; I also prefer traditional caches, mainly out in the woods. I dont mind doing some of the puzzle ones. Around here, people have a tendency to place them on their property, with notes such as "stop by, knock on the door, and say hi!". Me, I prefer to remain anonymous. On a brighter note, 10 more till I hit 200! I have a special cache I plan on visiting on my 200th; its called the depot. It is a toy train set, set up in the middle of the woods. I hear if you catch the owner, he will turn it on for you. So, we will see!!!

Yeah, I've been doing it for a few years...but only intermittently. Since my son got his own GPS for Christmas, I expect we'll be out more this coming spring & summer.
It's a great way to get out with something fun for the whole family to do. I enjoy both the item trades & the virtual caches. The virtuals can be very informative if the cache "owner" does his homework.
Middle TN seems to be a hotbed of the sport, from the logs I read. I know there are hundreds around here.

I've done a few with my kids. I tend to like those that combine use of the GPS along with compass bearings. One of the funnest we did gave even had me find a phone booth, call a toll-free number, and then use information from the recording to get the next bearing.
Ironically that bearing took us to a picnic table on which a young woman was sitting reading with her back to us. At first we didn't notice, but it turned out to be the mother of my daughter's best friend. Her daughter was at the playground playing, so the final leg of that cache was done solo.

Wanted to go this morning but it's only 22 deg. here on the Sonoran desert. These mules don't want to leave the hay stack and I don't believe I can be pryed away from this heater

Yep.
Awesome way to find new places not mentioned in trail books.

Ive been geocaching for a while. Love it. There are 8 geocaches here in BAF and a total of 30 in Afghanistan. I think that I'll just get the 8 around here.
