I carried on my quest for affordable yet quality 100% wool blankets in a world of synthetics. I found to my surprise that they do have some at Sears.ca (I had already asked for wool blankets but they didn't have them at that time). There are the Martha Stewart Everyday Wool Blankets available for $60 (CAN). I don't know who's Martha Stewart. The name doesn't sound like a woolen mills name but rather like a designer's name. Do you think they are a good choice or are they like too soft or something? There are also Silkeborg of Denmark oversized throws and they don't even use dyes or chemicals, they are left in their natural colors but they are more than twice as expensive as from hotelblankets.com.

I also found a woolen mills in my province, Ulverton Woolen Mills. They are like a museum and I may visit their exhibition, trails and boutique soon. They are about two hours drive from Montréal. It's basically a bunch of Scottish immigrants that settled and opened a woolen mills in Les Cantons de l'Est during the mid-19th century, using the energy from the Ulverton river.

And finally, I can't resist the patterns on this Faribault Jacquard woven throw named Runestone with Viking patterns. If I end up buying it I will put on my Hedingarna Ukkonen (Thunder God) song while contemplating it:

I haven't, never heard of Ulverton woolen mills... I went to their website but couldn't find a place where you could buy blankets.

I'd like a wool blanket too for my car, it would be nice if we could find a place with no-hassle shipping to Canada. Why are you worried about mothballs ? The surplus blankets are sometimes new items, so there shouldn't be any problems.

I like the navy blanket (see link up this thread)... i'm trying to find a similar one that can be shipped to Canada.

Hi Bee, I don't mean to buy over the internet, I mean to go there visit the trails, the exhibition and buy some souvenirs from the boutique. Besides, it's neat to buy something from our local soil like our cheeses (produits du terroir as we say in french) and I'm thinking the sheeps that are grown in our own climate and humidity are maybe more efficient for here although maybe it's just a subtle difference.

As I remember, several armies' blankets (including th US) have been treated with chemicals (not just mothballs). I seem to remember reading about carcinogens being used in at least some US blankets. Anyone?

I suppose washing them would take care of the chemicals.
Never heard of US wool blankets being treated with chemicals. I have seen some of the quilted "causualtry evac"
"blankets "that had a tag on them saying they were treated from Gulf War 1. I didn't smell or notice anything other than the tag. BTW, saw that Sportsmans Guide had wool blankes in something they sent me earlier in the week.

FWIW, I recommend the Italian Officer's Blanket -- surplus, but new. I bought one a month or so ago for my truck kit. It's an excellent blanket though, so I ordered another.

You will need to wash before using in your home due to heavy chemical smell. I left the chemicals and put the blanket in my truck kit.

Frankie, a Hudson's Bay point blanket is the only way to go. They are undervalued and will last several lifetimes.

Pretty hard to beat 200 years of fame, service, and durability.

I buy them on eBay. The one on my bed right now is @100 years old, by the label design. Looks like new, and sleep like a baby in a 55~60 degree cabin.

I saw them at The Bay, downtown Montréal. They have them all, all sizes and colors/patterns. I like the scarlet one with a black stripe. But they are heavy. For the time being my mother gave me an old Buffalo plaid throw and an old shrinked blanket (somebody washed it in the machine) but I may go with the Hudson's Bay and I'm still planning on visiting the Ulverton woolen mill.

That's an awesome price! I've been waiting to find an affordable option on these in order to have a capote made up for next deer season.

I bought a couple of Swiss army blankets from a surplus netstore here in Finland. Cost me only 17 euros each. Very pleased with them, a bit itchy but warm and ''comfy''. 100% wool, size 210cm x 140cm.
