So here is the survival scenario:
Your plane has crashed and you have floated to a beach on a island.
You have your small life boat raft(still inflated).you lost the survival kit that was with it,while on the ocean.
You have a long sleeve shirt on with a white t-shirt on under it, cargo pants, and tennis shoes.(socks and underwear of course).
You have a set of 3 keys on a lanyard.(2 house and 1 car key).
Your wallet, with 3 $20 bills,family pictures,and 2 credit cards.
a Bic pen.
a mini mag flashlight(led)still working.
and your old swiss army knife(nothing fancy)
a leather belt.
and a bag of skittles(not the huge ones).

What do you do to survive?tell what you do or whatever.
i thought id try this out, thought it be fun to see response's. its like a survivorman scenario.it may be vague but o well. it doesnt have to be a huge response but just some basic things you do.whatever you want.God Bless

I would do what I'velearned ovr the years and survive.

To write-out wat you want could take days or weeks.

I don't think that any ETS-member would have that little equipment with him/her then
the equipment you described in your post. At least a PSK and a decent knife/multitool.

Or do you mean a commercial instead of a private airplane?

Anyway, the life-raft can be used as a shelter, I see that there are no fire-starters,
so maybe use a piece of glass or make a fire-drill. Water and food can probably be found on the island.
I would also try to recover as much of plane wrechage (sp?) as possible.

And last, but not least, I would be ashamed that I wasn't better prepared and hope for the best!!

Well, this would be a good time to figure out how to make and use a fire drill, wouldn't it? Without a signal fire, you may be there for a long time.

You have nothing to carry water in, except a thin, cheap plastic bag, and nothing to make a simple still to make drinking water. All you have for rainwater collection is the raft, so you'd better hope it rains a lot. (And you'd better drag it far from the beach and weigh it down with rocks.) If you can't find a source of fresh water (and there may not be any on a small island, as this is not a Hollywood island), you may be in deep doodoo if you can't depend on rain.

And if you can't find or make water, there's no point in wasting your soon-to-dwindle energy on finding food.

I would say that your failure to plan better has landed you in a very tight spot, and you're probably going to have to depend on someone else pulling you out of it.

Water, shelter, and fire asap, food can wait a couple of days. Walk the beach, you will find all kinds of usefull stuff washed up on the beach...

OK I am off from work today
So assuming it was a commercial flight I would have a Classic SAK.
This would probably be what I would be "able" to sneak passed the TSA.Also you did not specify the geographic locale so I will choose the pacific somewhere tropical.

That said here goes;
I pull the raft ashore and to the tree line so it can be used as the start of a shelter.

I would look around the general area to begin a plan for my shelter, water, signals and eventually food.

I would probably eat the skittles because I love them and would rather have a morale boost now to get off to a good start in a good mood.
I might keep a few to use as bait later but being an island I would guess that I could scrounge up something for bait anyway.

I would look for coconuts because they may be one of the only source of clean water. When I found some I would open them by using a stick and big rock. The stick to shred off the outer husk and then use the rock to crack it open.

I would also look along the beach for any streams feeding out from the island; possible fresh water. Great thing about a beach is it is hard to get lost if you stay along the water.

If I find no source of fresh water I would set the raft up as a sheltetr by leaning it lean-to style with the top up so that any rain water would pool at the lower end. This way I would use the raft as a cistern as well as shelter. I would use palm fronds in many ways to build the shelter; whole ones for shingling and shredded ones for bedding and insulation.

To make fire I would try using the lens on the maglight and or the reflector. The lens as a magnifier and the refector as sort of a "solar cigarette lighter".
If the did not work I would proceed to create a bow drill set. I have dabbled a bit but never really mastered this but I do understand the important concepts especially the correct way to make the notch. I would us the SAK and my keys (as a saw and drill) to make the set. I would use s shoelace for the bow.

Coconut husk and shredded palm fronds would make a decent tinder bundle; I may use some lint off my socks as well.

After fire is made I would finish the shelter and build signal fires.

Then start thinking about ways to get food. Keys and coins may be able to act as lures to bring fish close enough to be speared by a makshift spear. The spear tip is made by using the bic pen tube and sharpening it on a nearby rock and then notching it with the SAK to make a single sharp barb. Lash this to a stick with either shoelace, strips of some clothing (bottom of pants or T shirt, I would keep the LS shirt intact.) or some cordage made of some palm leaves. Dangle the keys in the water at the end of your other shoelace to atract fish and hope fully spear them.
I might also use some chum by locating some snails, clams, limpets etc. Crush them and toss in the water to attract fish. I could also eat the snails and such too.

Eat coconuts.

Wait to get rescued.

Well that was my shot at it. It is not completely detailed. Feel free to criticize. I can take it. I think I got a few ideas from Survivorman.
Maybe I should have just made a radio out of the cocnuts and called for help?

hey billym im suprised, on all the invetory you thought of all the same things i intended for people to use in the situation, i was wondering if anyone would think of the maglite lense fire.and using the keys as a saw and pen as a dagger. i used my survior man memory in choosing the items for the situation and you thought of the majority of the uses,so good job.

and yes skittles do rock.
btw if anyone has seen castaway with tom hanks he said that coconut juice is like a natural laxative, dont know if this is true but you use what you got.

Les drank a lot of coconut on a couple of his shows; he didn't seem to get ill.
I would definitely rather have plain water and if need be I would begin digging up along the beach to find water. I have read that if you dig behind the first row of dunes you will get water without the salt; I have never confirmed this.

Perhaps another way would be to scavenge some trash and build some sort of still to remove the salt. This would take some thinking about but I am sure that on every island in the world there is trash that has floated there.
