I'll have to dig out my book boxes. Offhand, the ordeal of Hugh Glass has always fascinated me. For those unfamiliar, Glass was in a trapping party and badly mauled by a grizzly. He survived, but two companions abandoned him after a few days, taking his possessions and rejoining the company. They claimed he had died. Glass literally crawled and later walked back through bad weather, hostile indians , aggressive animals and terrain. He later confronted one companion who abandoned him. Rather than take revenge, he merely took repossession of his rifle and surrendered judgement to god. That companion became a famous trapper/explorer and this tale has raised considerable controversy. Another fun read is The Mad Trapper of Rat River. An American had a shootout with N.W.M.P. constables and started an incredible manhunt until his death ( Dudley Doright always gets his man).
