I have a Cold Steel "Outdoorsman," and the leather sheath is...well...crap. Does anyone know some good sources for custom-made Kydex (or other material) sheaths?

Thanks.

-John McIntire

John,

Check at Blade Forums and Knife Forums. I had a couple of links for custom sheath makers around here... anyway, you should be able to get some directions from those places.

Tom

I can highly recommend Eric at On-Scene Tactical
http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/
His reputation for Kydex sheath work is terrific. Follow some of the threads in Blade Forums, etc. I think he may even have some "ready to go" sheaths for the Cold Steel series.

You might want to consider having the sheath configured with a Tec-loc belt attachment system. For the slight increase in cost, you get a lot of attachment choices. If you really anticipate being tumbled around, you might ask Eric about "jump certified" sheath systems... or a secondary fastener in addition to the fit of the Kydex.

With all due respect, unless Cold Steel makes a Kydex or Concealex sheath for the Outdoorsman knife specifically (and I believe they don't), I'd suggest against ordering one which "should fit". The beauty of Kydex or Concealex is the exact custom fit to the knife you own. And often that exact fit is the primary method of retention.

I suggest ordering a few sheets of Kydex from Texas Knifemakers supply and make your own following the included instructions. I have discovered that Kydex is ridiculously easy to work with and a with just a heat gun, gloved hands and a utility knife, a trained monkey could make a nice sheath. All for about 5 bucks.
