I have used a Freeplay Plus for many years (solar or spring-driven). I've also had a Coleman Outrider (same as the Freeplay Ranger) which is solar or dynamo. I have used both as daily-use radios (still do) and think that Freeplay's are good products.
From what I've heard, the Eton FR series radios are also good products, and get better reception than the Freeplay's (at least the analog tuning Freeplay models). But no solar.
I've never actually seen one in person, but another product from a solid radio company is the Sangean MMR-77. No solar, but you can crank-recharge the NiMH battery, and it will also take 2AA's. Also water resistant. I saw it on the C.Crane website for $60.
