Geoff,

Sorry for the silent welcome. You are right though, not many trappers post here. If you have any other questions about wilderness survival we can probably yak your ear (eyes?) off.

For trapping-specific questions I reccomend "Buckshot's Camp". The wealth of trapping knowledge there is amazing (at least to a trapping novice like me). He has a good article about 220 Conibears at:

I'm not sure what you are asking.
If you know what a 220 coni is, then you already know the difference between a kill trap and a hold trap, and the various sets.

Trapping for tradition, fun and profit, have little crossover with survival traps and snares.
I carry muskrat trap in my possibles bag with my blackpowder kit, but in a real emergency, I'd be making and setting bird snares.

Back when I was trapping, I believed that the Connibears would be likely to break ribs and puncture skin, reducing the value of the pelt. We did use them here and there, mostly in streams for mink, and that never happened.

The Connibears have to be set vertically, so that the animal can run through them. In Cold Bay, there weren't a lot of places we could do that, and that may be why we never overcame our prejudice against them.

One big advantage of leghold traps is that if you trap something you don't want, you can let it go.

I'd advise you to have some of each; they each have some strong points.

Hey,

I use cage traps all the time to keep the critters out of the garden. They go in and trigger the spring loaded sides to come down. One serious advantage of this trap is that people are not going to step on it and lose a toe or foot. Also, the critter is still alive and undamaged. Dispose of as you see fit.
