I agree with others that the Garmin 12 XL is a good choice. The Garmin 12 and 12 XL have several advantages over the Etrex models. The 12 XL, not the 12, accepts an external active antenna which would probably be necessary under heavy overhead vegetation. These older model Garmins have an indicator telling when the fix is 3-demensional. The Etrexes don't. This is important for accuracy. A 2-D fix should never be used. It can be 1/4 to 1/2 mile off. The Etrex screen will show an approximate position accuracy in feet. If you wait until it below about 50 feet you can be fairly confident that it is 3-d, but it is not clear cut as with the 12's. I own both of these types but use them for different purposes. In downloading positions and tracks to the computer for mapping purposes the 12's seem to have the edge for accuracy. They are basically just simpler to use. All of the Garmin units are supposedly waterproof unless submerged under water for some time.
