Tom, I would suggest increasing the # of water purification tablets. A small whistle is a good addition. I carry a whistle and mirror on a "breakaway" neck lanyard under my clothing AND a small whistle and mirror in my PSK. I assume the large hook is for a gaff. You need to scribe a groove and secure with a small nail through the eye and finish with lashing. Include a small nail for this use. Buillion cubes are virtually all salt. You can delete it or the salt. Small multi tool folders of SAK type are nice but a little fragile. An option would be the small CRKT locking folders. Finally a crib sheet ( check out Bill Vans effort in a recent post) and some paper and small pencil or pen insert will have you in better shape than many.

Chris, thanks for your input. I have been waiting for my "rite in the rain" note book to come in and as soon as it does its goin right into my psk as well as a small pencil. The wistel would be a nice adition and i have been looking for one but i havent found one that would work and fit neatly into my psk.

Just review all of Doug's articles and the retail list. It's all there. In fact, I find myself torn between equally good products. I respond with enthusiastic consumerism and buy one of each. This may be a good place to quote from the NSW Kayaker website "Carry as much equipment as you possibly can, and then never make any paddling decision based on the fact that you have that equipment." -Wayne Langmaird

Xavier, Lee Valley Tools sells 3 grades of what looks like sandpaper. It is for dressing extremely hard chisels and other oddly shaped woodcarving tools. It has a sticky back for application on various glass or wood rods and plates. I found it effective for a minimum sharpening option. I merely applied it to my smaller aluminum PSK boxes.

Chris, from your previous entry, it sounds like you would fold two peices in half and carry inside your PSK. Then you would apply one half of each grit to the tin in an emergency situation, leaving another two peices in reserve for an extended situation, correct?<br><br>BTW, I just ordered a similar set from Rockler Woodworking & Hardware. I was placing an order for other items anyway and added their "Fine Paper Set" (Item #25033) for $5.99. It includes "two each of 800, 1200, 1500, and 2000 grit, 41/2'' x 11'' Klingspor finest paper with ''peel and stick'' application."<br><br>The Lee Valley product offers 1000, 2500, & 9000 grit. So this is comparible except for the 9000 grit, which I doubt would make a significant difference in the woods.

Bill, correct on the folded paper. I tend to dress my knife edges frequently with a hone, rather than let them become so dull a major resharpening is neccessary. I will have to test the papers out on a truly fatiqued blade. I am slowly collecting a few knives to compare the different approaches.

Nice to see the website of my club quoted by Chris! This does raise a pertinent point. I have developed a PSK to suit my lifestyle. That is, I am a kayaker and because I spend a lot of time on the ocean by myself, my PSK reflects that survival situation. Items such as suncream, lip salve, medication for sunstroke, stingers have priority. So my PSK reflects the expected environment.
