Here's link to six-page Popular Mechanics article (Aug 2005), "Would You Survive?." Examines several outdoor survival situations.

No major revelations to this group, but interesting reading nevertheless.

The Popular Mechanics article was indeed a very interesting read (I think this is the first time I’ve read Popular Mechanics since I was a kid).

The best survival articles are ones which include case studies, analyzing what a person did wrong and what they did right. Field & Stream published such an article in their February 2004 issue, called Survival Stories. You can find each of the Survival Stories on-line at Field & Stream’s website at the following links:

Lost in a Storm

Frozen in the Forest

Thanks for the links. I've printed them all out. Going to read them thoroughly.

Interesting that the article says to include flagging or construction marking tape as a signalling technique. Anyone include that in their mobile kit? I've got several rolls of the stuff, I wouldn't include a whole roll, but some number of feet extracted (as with Duct Tape). Light and not too bulky.
Thoughts?

Almost always in kits, although I'm more likely to be carrying red or bright orange electricians tape in my EDC bag.

I'v efound taht the best way to use survey tape for signalling is to tie it to a stick, in about 24" or longer strips, one next to the other until the "flag" is about two feet wide. No need to take care of the end.

I include 10-20 feet in my small kits - more in the larger. It takes up very little room wrapped around the tin. I had considered it less for sgnalling, however, and more for trail marking.

Cody Lundin and Scott Kozakiewicz recommend 10 feet of flagging tape for signaling. It flutters nicely in any breeze. I have some tied to a clamp-type paper clip. I clip it on a branch, near me, when I am coyote hunting. It lets other hunters know someone is there. It is helpful to see which way your scent is going.

It can also be used for a drip line, for your shelter, to keep the rain from following your cord into your shelter.
