Now, this thing cost me $20 bucks at the Walgreens, so I'm trying to keep my hopes down ... but I think I've found an EDC bag that might work for me ... if it shows any durability or even the ability to be repaired.
Got a medium-sized almost-teardropped shaped sling bag in black cordura-like nylon. The main compartment has a zippered mesh pocket across the back interior that runs full width and about half the height. I've tucked my poncho, a blaze orange bandanna, an LM wave in nylon sheath, a Ritter Mk1 in Bianchi sheath, a Stanley 7" bar wrapped in a bandanna, Garrity AA light with exnon bulb and a diamond sharpening stick (both in the flashlight sheath), and a pair of leather gloves and some cordage in there. It all rides fairly flat and doesn't shift much.
Put a flat-pack of duct tape, a supplemented Ritter PSK and a AMK Ultralight .5 FAK in its Aloksak (but sans yellow pouch) into a mesh envelope-like pouch (also from the Walgreens). That pouch fits easily into main compartment, as do a binder, portfolio & pad and etc from office.
Front of the bag has two oval-shaped pockets, one with zipper closure and another with quick-release buckle. Larger pocket includes an organizer panel. In those pockets, have pens, lighters, pocket calculator, cell phone, earpiece, charger cord, checkbook/daytimer, cigs, etc. Photon II LED clipped to a zipper.
It has a padded back with mesh cover, padded shoulder strap and a belt that's padded across a portion of it's length. I'll probably never actually wear the bag with the strap across the chest and the belt on, but I've checked it out and it doesn't feel too bad. It also has a rubber handle at top of bag for 1-handed carry.
Carried in 1 hand or slung over a shoulder, it carries pretty comfortably, and it looks kind of sleek/tech, so I don't think it will look out of place even on the days when i have to wear a jacket & tie.
Will see how it goes.
