As you may know, the course I was planning to take, "Emergency Planning: Better Safe Than Sorry," was cancelled because I was the only one who signed up. Story of my life. Rueful grin.

Well, I tracked down the fire marshal who was going to be in charge of the course. I emailed him that I was still interested in anything he had to impart.

I also asked the community college registrar to pass on my contact info to the instructor, and she said she would. I thought she would decline. I figured I'd hit paydirt one way or another.

Wonder of wonders, he emailed me. He sent to a page in the Montgomery County website and guided me through page after page, and link after link, until I arrived at a page of citizens' guides in PDF format. He had been planning to use the first PDF as his classrom manual. Cool!

He also gave me a few other tips that should prove useful. Very nice guy. And he has the same last name as my beloved brother-in-law.

I started reading this 200-page missive and discoved that, if I believe I have learned something after reading it, I can go to a certain web address, take a test, and get a certificate. Very Cool!

The crying shame here is that unless you know where to look for these citizens' guides, you probably won't find them in a million years. It took me quite a while to drill down through the site, and this was with guided help. Sigh.

Pardon me. Must dash. I'm off to do some serious reading and earn a certificate.

Here you go:

First a note: This seems to work best with IE rather than Firefox.

Aim your browser at http://www.montcopa.org/
When you're on the website, click on "Public Safety" in the left column.
On the resulting page, click on "Office of Emergency Preparedness" in the top row.
On the resulting page, click on "Citizen's Preparedness Guides," in the second of the top two rows.
On the resulting page
(http://www.montcopa.org/eoc/OEP/citizenpreparednesspage.htm), he was going to use the first one or two PDF documents.

Let me know if this helps any.
