It's a little thing, but my EDC came in handy this afternoon in the dog park. We were there when an impromptu fight broke out.

One poor dog got a puncture in his nose that bled pretty profusely. I was able to offer the owner my handkerchief to clean up the blood and help stop the bleeding.

In all that park, nobody had a rag or cloth or tissue but me.

The owner was actually reluctant to "get blood on it" but I told her she could just throw it out afterwards. "Your puppy is way more important than a little square of cloth."

Great feeling. Thanks gang.

I've been rebuilding my wardrobe lately and notice a serious gaff. Gentlemen no longer have a handkerchief in their breast suit pocket. A colourfull silk pocket square or white cotton handkerchief makes for a excellent emergency signal, impromptu container and as noted bandage. Rhett Butler always had one available for Scarlett and Melanie received a contribution wrapped in another perfume soaked one. My fellow southerners ( californians <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> ) may run around in sweat pants, but not me. Congratulations on the save.

Last year, when walking along a small countryside road with friends, a young dog came out of the nearby woods and followed us.
But it was running around and twice jumped in front of a passing car, which barely missed it.
So, I took a piece of string (sorry, didn't have paracord at that time ... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> ) out of my backpack and made a leash to keep the dog under control.
There was a portable phone number etched on its collar.
We were able to call his master, who was hunting in the woods. He was happy to hear we had found his young dog.
Apparently that was this young fellow's first hunting day. I still don't know if it get lost or if it was just bored with hunting and prefered to get away ... <img src="/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
A short time after, both were reunited.

I usually carry a walking stick (Nose high and 11/4” diameter) when I walk my dogs since there always seems to be some dog looking to come running up to them and start something. I would much rather keep it from happening than clean it up afterward. My Fila would rather have it out with them but its better for neighbor relations to keep a low profile.

I'm a relatively new dog owner myself, and I've been advised by friends to steer clear of "Dog Parks." Seems that all those dogs concentrated in one spot seem to drop a lot of stool, which in turn seems to translate to a lot of disease (worms, parvo, etc.) Is this just urban legend? If not, I know Fergus would just love the company! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Never tried the doggy routine, but when I was youger, I did use my cute little nephew on the local beach in Milwaukee by having him get "lost" and ask for help from prescanned and selected cuties. My friend and I would just happen by and "find" my poor "lost" nephew.

That kid lives in Seattle, Washington now with a rich wife and assets up the ying yang. He sure did know how to parlay those little bribes we paid him. <img src="/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Vince, as long as your dog is completely up to date on his vaccinations, he should be all right. And I mean vaccinations recorded in b&w, no "Oh, yeah, he's got all his shots" from the person you got him from. No proof = no vaccs. However, that won't protect him against parasites, when you take him in for his annual checkup (or if he shows weight loss), ask for a test.

Most dogs enjoy the company of other dogs, as they are pack animals. But occas., some fool lets their aggressive dog lose and causes trouble. Be aware & watch your pet.

Theoretically, all those people should be picking up after their dogs, or they're going to lose their privileges. (Of course, even after picking up, the soil could still be contaminated.)

I agree with Susan here. If your dog is vacinated, you should be good to go. Dogs love spending time with people, but would rather be with other dogs. There is a lot of joy in watching your dog run and play. Nothing and I mean nothing can tire out a dog like another dog.

One thing to be wary of is to make sure you have your pet vaccinated for Kennel Cough. That is the only thing my dogs managed to pick up from the park.

If you are worried about them "bringing home diseaese" remember that a lot of animals poop all over the ground and no one picks it up. Just wipe your dogs feet and rinse it off if they get really dirty. Wash no more than weekly using non-perfumed gentle dog soap.
