I was reading a post on Bushcraft UK that mentioned Crazy Eric's kit:

http://ericlefou.1.online.fr/MES_TRUCS/MESobjets/Mon_equipement/international.htm

I went to that site again, and did the usual "tsk, tsk" stuff in my mind about how he let it get away from him...

But some part of my mind is going "Calf-pouches. Sayyyyy.... That's not a bad idea...."

And now I'm a little frightened about what I may become.

that is really unbelievable. we talk here about "PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER." and the reactions of an SAK compared to a fixed blade in the office environment etc. If I walked into work packed like that guy, I would be on the street by the end of the week. I get grief because I carry a backpack!

Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you. <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

What is supprising is his list isn't too far off from what a lot of us carry on our person plus what is in our kits and BOB's, he just carries it all at once.

If he goes overboard he's gonna sink with that 33lb jacket on. <img src="/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Come on take it easy on him;
From one gear freak to another, we all know we wish we could be this prepared. We just don't want the kind of attention this guy gets. <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Well, there's prepared and then there is OCD. For some of us there may be a fine line between the two, but this guy is well over the line.

"Over the line" is a relative term, and you know how unpredictable relatives can be.

Forty years ago when I worked in the Youth Conservation Corps at a campsite in Waushara, Wisconsin, I was the only one who carried a canteen when we were dropped off at worksites with food and water for the day. The other guys laughed and thought me paranoid since we had a lot of water and we were picked up at the end of the workday by trucks.

One day while trimming trees to a 20' height with long pruning poles, the truck came late because of mechanical problems. The stock water ran out, but my canteen was full and I ended up sharing with some of my detractors.

You just never know.

So, would you consider the PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. who are adamant that they WON'T prepare for anything as obsessive-compulsive in the other direction?

I guess it's just a matter of perspective.

Anyway, I hope that guy never goes near an MRI machine without fully undressing....

Prepared is good. Weighing yourself down with a buch of junk you don't need is silly. I am not going to define for you what junk is. Does he need swimming briefs every day? Does he need them for a survival situation? Much of what he carries is useful, much was total overkill. Inflatable pillow? Nice, but hardly needed for day to day operations.

There can sometimes be too much of a good thing. I could survive as well as Monsieur SAK with less than half that stuff.

Susan I consider the PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. that don't prepare to be PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER..
