Perhaps it's time for a review of LED headlamps. Headlamps have long been used in caving, mountaineering, etc... and are perfectly suited for survival uses. I'm actually surprised they never made the initial LED review. I know they've been discussed here previously, but I am so impressed with my collection I thought I would bring the topic up again.

Personally, I like the Petzl Tactikka Plus:

It's got 4 white LED's, a flip-down red filter, and the angle is adjustable. Also, the brightness level is selectable, so I can make it real dim and flip the red filter down to preserve my night vision when I'm flying.

There are some 1 and 3 W LED headlights that have been reviewed over at CPF, worth a look-see.

I like the Zipka models for the small size you gain by not having a thick head strap.

I am thrilled with my Arc AAA, which is not a headlamp, but with a clip from a AAA Mag Light, I clip it to my baseball cap, which I always have when outdoors for any period of time (bald head). This system is much more versatile to me than a dedicated headlamp, which always seemed a bit cumbersome to me. With my light, I can use it as a standard hand held light, plus it's so small with its single AAA battery that it fits in the smallest pocket or kit. It's very bright, enough for just about any of my needs, and built super tough.

I recommend the reviews at Flashlight Reviews .

LED flashlights in general and headlamps in particular are undergoing rapid and innovative changes these days. It's either a great time (because things are getting better), or terrible (because as soon as you buy something it's obsolete).

Flashlight reviews even refers to this site in discussing improvments to the venerable Tekna Splash-lite!
