I have the exact same problem with mini/micro kits. I start packing them and before I know it have a full size tin kit or even a belt pouch-sized kit. I'm working on a micro kit right now and having lots of trouble. I'm trying to come up with the most functional urban/rural 72 hour kit I can in a container about half the size of an altoids tin. So far I'm not having much luck. Once I at least get a decent start on it I may post info to try to get help from the group if I'm still struggling with it.

I'm having one BIG emotional/logical disconnect between what I actually use every day and what I want to carry every day.

I can weed things out and come up with a compact kit. However, after I add in my winter gear and my "cool stuff" I want to have with me, then my compact kit suddenly grows into a considerably larger package more difficult to lug around with me.

But Craig, east you have SOME stuff. The usual reply I get when queried about what I carry around is, Oh, someone else will have what I need! Right ...

I have long since given up preaching preparedness. It got me nowhere fast. I simply mind my own business and travel through my day with enough preparedness to suit myself. I am also taking a local course in Emergency Planning to see what I may be missing.

Finally put together a little micro kit for EDC. Today is my first day to carry it and while it is still larger than I would prefer, it is almost half the size of an Altoids tin. I have all of the following in a very small wallet/business card holder. I'll post a pic when I get home tonight. The contents are as follows:

EDC Pouch Kit:

-Ferrocerium Rod (Removed from Doans MFS) **Fire Starting**
-3 Katadyn MP-1 Water Purification Tabs **Water Purification**
-Razor/Utility Knife **Multiple Uses including Striking a Spark on Ferrocerium Rod**
-4 Butterfly Sutures **Sterile Wound Closure**
-Large Oven Bag **Water Storage/Purification**
-6 Alcohol Pads **Sound Sterilation and Fire Starting Tinder**
-20" x 1.6" Duct Tape **Multiple Uses including Water Bag Repair**

Other EDC Items:

-Knife of some type (fixed blade, folder or multitool)
-Watch w/ Compass (Timex Exeption)
-Wallet (Relatively small/tin)
-Key Ring w/ Keys and Photon II

Looking forward to the pic. Let me know where you post it. I could post a few myself, but don't have my own website. <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I have had good luck with imgpost.com. I will get the pic posted tonight in this same thread. Meant to do it last night but got pulled in to a meeting at the last minute which put me home much later than usual.
