Recently I read this interview with the author of a cookbook for disabled people. It occurred to me many of their concerns overlap with emergency prep concerns. You can easily get hurt during an emergency or disaster. What will you do then? For example, remember the splint you keep in your med kit? What if you had to use it for a broken arm? You may find yourself having to prepare dinner with one arm. What adaptive technologies or techniques might you need?

A big point that the article makes is that many of us experience temporary disability or become disabled in old age. That is so true. I wish people could be more aware of it and more sympathetic to the those experiencing disability, whether temporary or permanent.

Another big point is that kitchens are often designed to look nice, not to be convenient. If you injured your knee & need to use a walker to get around, you may not be able to use your refrigerator or oven easily.

Yeah, when I wrecked my shoulder just over 2.5 years ago it was eye opening! I was on work comp for almost two years and for the first year or so I was pretty useless. The simplest household chores were very difficult to do with one arm, and the off arm at that.

Yeah, agreed, it's something to plan for -- and to practice a little. The brain can be trained to do this.

I've read that some folks practice shooting with their non-dominant hand so they have an option if things go badly.

Years ago, I messed up the tendons in my right arm. No comp or anything. But I still had to eat, and that meant computer work. So I had to learn to mouse with my left hand, just to spread out the load and let myself heal. It wasn't as fast and I certainly had to concentrate harder to be accurate. But it worked. And it stuck to this day -- I have a mouse on either side of the keyboard.

Maybe as a guitar player doing complex stuff with my left hand, I did a little brain training from early on.

Draw, shoot, reload, and clear stoppages, strong hand only and support hand only. There are several ways that are reasonably safe to practice and drill on, and more that are not.

Awhile ago I had said to do your daily tasks......with the other hand. Pour a drink....non dominant. Use the toilet (TP) other hand. Brush your teeth...... you get the idea.

Good advice.

I think TP would be the toughest one. I suspect some pre-planning might be needed. Envision the moves beforehand ... :-)

Toileting...the TP would need to be precut and not on a roll (thinking out loud). A bidet might could work too. Spray first then clean.

Woke up a few years ago, with something wrong with my dominant right shoulder.

Could not move my arm enough to use TP.
Definitely should test your range of motion if suspect something is wrong.
