"Good article"? I'd say it is a great article! Excellent advice and perspective on a really tricky place for the uninitiated.

I particularly agree with the "hike at night" advice. I once joined a project (archaeological dig) in progress near Phantom Ranch. I left the South Rim at 2:30AM. I had plenty of light even without moonlight....

I think that the rescues mentioned in the article do not include the "drag outs," where an exhausted hiker on the corridor routes picks up the phone and pays for a mule ride back to the rim....

Great ideas - and cotton is recommended here, though not in other, non-desert environments.

Cotton or wool/synthetics is more about the temperatures. Cotton will not keep you warm when it is wet, but in a hot dry environment, it breathes and is cool, and is generally more durable than most synthetic clothing.

One thing I really appreciate when it's hot - a full brimmed cotton "boony style hat, soaked in water
