A good start would be the BSA merit badge books for First Aid and Emergency Preparedness. Simple, practical, do not require much expense and effective. Both (among others) are available here:

I just finished Emergency Prep, and we did First Aid last year. While these are age appropriate, they are a great beginning for anyone.

list of items that everyone should carry daily (EDC).

ie: a tiny AAA flashlight is extremely valuable during a late-afternoon winter power failure, or in large windowless buildings like Costco or Home Depot...

as Mr Coyote commented, possibly a suggestion on some minimum EDC, not job oriented, tools... the pic is old, and the Fenix E01 has been replaced by a much brighter E05 with lithium cell.. I broke the plastic mini whistle (I place the key ring on a clip, and the keys cascade into my pocket)by sitting on it... the pill fob has aspirin, and room for other meds like Benedryl or meclizine... the P38, well everyone needs a P38
