There was a post a few weeks ago regarding a cup that a Nalgene bottle would fit into. I found a metal cup with folding handles that fits. It's available from Emergency Essentials www.BePrepared.com Item # TU1-CK-C410 Glacier Stainless Steel Bottle Cup $6.50. Found on page 22 of the Spring catalog.

I was looking for such a cup about a year ago and someone suggested Campmor as a source. I bought a couple of the "Olicamp Space Saver Cup" (item #25001, $5.99) and have been real happy with them. They are also made out of stainless steel. I've heard the "Snowpeak Titanium Folding Cup" (item #65123, $24.99) might also fit the bottom of a Nalgene bottle but I haven't seen one in a store to try it.

The website you mentioned is an interesting one. The collapsible tripod stove looks like something I might try. They show it used with Sierra cups but one of these "bottle cups" should work on them also. I think the fuel tablets from an Esbit stove would work or it could probably be set right on top of the coals from a wood fire. I already carry an Esbit stove but I'm always looking for something even simpler.

Is a Nalgene bottle better than an army surplus canteen?

I bought a canteen in a local "military supplies" store and I ordered a stainless steel GI CANTEEN CUP and GI CANTEEN CUP STOVE STAND from Brigade Quartermasters. (www.actiongear.com).

Is there a significant advantage to the Nalgene bottle and cup?

Actually, there is currently some controversy regarding toxins leaching from Nalgene, so it may be disadvantageous. Most likely it will end up being another "Caution, living is hazzardous to your health" items.

That has been thrashed to death on the Survival Forum. A lot of the "toxic leaching" controversy stems from a study of doubtful scientific integrity that was extrapolated out to project possible human risks. Truth be told, almost ANYTHING is soluble in water - you can dissolve a battleship if you're willing to wait that long.

A big difference is the wide muoth of the Nalgene bottle. It is easier to pour into it.So if you are using the cup to boil/purify water,it will spill less in transfer.

But wide mouth also offers disadvantage when you try to drink from it fast and spill the bevarge due to overflow at the mouth. Still I like it a lot. They are really durable and in the winter when filled with hot water they can be used as a nice portable heater.

Matt--

Re: wide-mouth spills:
Have you seen this type device?
( Link to REI ) It's a splashguard for the Nalgene bottles. Outdoor Products also makes something similar.
