A few days ago when I was messing around with the driver's dooor on my car because of a broken exterior handle I managed to break a wire the leads to the tweeter in the door. I figured I would fix it when the new handle came in. Well, today I just couldn't let it go. I was at my brother's house when the bug hit me. The wire broke off of the little spade lug that is inserted into the connector. I had to pull the lug/pin out. Since I still do not carry around a multi-tool I had to figure out a way to fix it; mainly because of my OCD tendencies. I recall how much I hated pin insertion/removal tools when I was in the Air Force. They were marginal at best. But, that is what I needed. The little squirrels in my head started running around. Then it came to me - the tweezers on my Victorinox Classic that was on my keychain. Those things are 99% useless. However, they worked perfectly for slipping into the back of the connector. I then used the SwissCard pen that I carry in my wallet to push the pin/lug out. I stripped the broken wire with a knife I keep in the door pocket. I had to borrow a pair of needle nose to crimp the wire back on. DONE! I still need to carry a multi-tool or two.

I guess the Classic can almost count as a multi-tool - almost.

If you plan to do any more wiring, may I recommend the Leatherman Squirt ES4. I have the earlier E4 and have used it for many wiring jobs where expedient tools were not going to work. Excellent wire strippers and the pliers tip works well with wiring.

I have tons of stuff for wiring. I just don't carry them with me. I would tend not to carry the ES4 mostly because I am most likely to need general pliers more than wire strippers.

I have to second this. I bought an E4 several years ago when I was doing electronics installs and maintenance. It was an instant EDC and kept me out of a few jams.

I have one of those too bought when it very first came out as the EL and was $40, the wire strippers are nice and sharp.

I'm guilty of improvised fixes too. Heck, I once fixed a neighbour's phone line with the cap off a Bic pen.

But I have to confess: sometimes McGyverisms work, but more often they take up more time than just getting the proper tools.
