Hi all, I came across this today. It's a new product called the Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter. It is a filter unit about the size of an Aquamira Frontier and comes with a mylar type bag. The filter can be separated from the bag and used on any standard bottle thread. Also of note is that water purification tablets are not needed with this filter (so they say).

Product info:

The filter won best in show from GearJunkie 2011. Here's a blog review of it (it's the second item on this page):

I do not see anywhere this has a charcoal component, so chemical removal does not appear to be a feature of this filtration system. I also do not see any method for viral inactivation, so depending upon where you are using the filter; you may still need to treat the water.

IMO
A bit bulky and no mention of a user replaceable pre-filter.
I have a Sawyer Hollow membrane filter (inline) and it works
very well but in silty water it can clog quickly. All filters need some
sort of user replaceable inexpensive pre-filter.

I believe Adventure Safety Products is their on line retailer...I found the best price there on my 5 gal .1 micron filter kit...

Yup, their FAQ/Instructions explain as much smile

A. First consider where you will use your filter. If it’s here in North America, then the 0.1 filter will probably do just fine. However, if you suspect there are viruses in the water then you need to either use the o.02 filter or add a small amount of chlorine to the water. If you are traveling overseas, the 0.02 would be the safest choice.

A 0.02 micron absolute filter is amazing smile but silver-ceramic is probably cheaper smile

I have the squeeze system and just had a chance to try it out. We are camping on our property in SE AZ and had a big T-Storm last hour. There were several large puddles so I decided to try the Sawyer system.

It works, as I expected it to. Dipping the samll bag into the puddle did nothing. You have to inflate it first. The best way to fill it may be to use the backwash syringe to fill it from a puddle. Flowing water may inflate it, though.

The water was clear and tasted like bottled water. No surprise.

On the negative side (only because Sawyer brought it up), I have yet to find a water bottle that it fits on, and I've tried many. Also, it's not tactical, the bags make a lot of noise.

Next, I have to find a convient way to carry it.
