a couple of gun safes in the corner bolted to the floor and wall studs can offer some protection against amatures..

Burglars' IQ in question:

Burglars snort ashes of cremated man and 2 dogs, thinking they'd stolen coke or heroin

Remorse:

...Once they realized their error, the suspects discussed returning the remaining ashes but threw them in a lake instead because they thought their fingerprints were on the containers

One wonders how this would have shook out if the guy had stored rat poison in the urn instead of, possibly in addition to, dads ashes.

I think this points out that while there are professional burglary crews who know about all the tricks the majority of burglars are not-to-smart amateurs who are far less likely to see through intricacies and complications, like urns kept of mantelpieces generally not being filled with drugs.

Most career criminals are not Lex Luther level geniuses.

Not cheap, but 3M security film is pretty effective:

Combine this with a couple Sliding Door Security Bars (one high, one low), motion-activated lighting, and a loud alarm and I think you'd be safe from anything short of a deranged madman with a chainsaw.

Security film is nice, but for what it costs to armor a french door(~$100 per door leaf) I could install security screen doors. For that kind of money, I'd save it for hardening a designated "safe" room in the house.

Also, it's a french door, not a sliding glass door. The only type of security bar that's any good is the braced type.
