Looks like another large storm front is moving down from Alaska to bring 3-6 FEET of new snow in the mountains, and 4"+ of rain in the foothills!

I ended up writing out a long check list of things I've done so far, and thought I should share with everyone:

http://www.self-sufficient-home.com/725-snow-rain-coming-to-northern-ca.html

What is everyone else doing to prepare for the heavy snow/rain on the way?

Friday drove from Stockton to Sacramento to Cloverdale, 4-5 hours on the road plus a couple of stops. From Sacramento on the rain and wind just kept getting more intense. I thought the Saturday mushroom adventure might be stuck inside all day.

Wrong! Saturday morning was mostly clear of rain and even the afternoon showers were light and very intermittent. I took part in 3 1/2 mushroom walks, pooping out when walk 3 was heading into an area I had already been that day.

Many matsutake and chantrelle, a couple hedgehog, a few lactarius, and one lonely but bueatiful big blewit. many other interesting but non-edible fungi. More good hunting discussions and practice sessions, including using the binomial keys in Arora's two books. Fine lunch.

Culinary report: chantrelles excellent, hedgehog maybe better [very meaty and almost smoky], matsutake smelled [floral and red-hots]much better than they tasted [bland], and blewit subtle and tasty [reminescent of articoke heart but more delicate].

A tiring but excellent day at Emerald Earth.

Sounds like good time even if a little wet smile

Still raining up here at 3500' and today the wind has picked up greatly! I am surprised no power issues yet.

Uh, in civilian terms tha would be "artichoke."

A little reading informs me that matsutake is to be grilled or roasted and not dry sauted, as we had it. Brought a couple home, so the experiment is possible [we have the technology]!

No snow frown

Just rain, and lots of it.
(Not much today.)

Noticed a bunch of new, dinner-sized potholes on a major street I often drive on. And it was recently repaved, so that doesn't sound good as far as the substrate of the road goes.

Sounds like tonight/tomorrow is the "big show" of this string of storms. I even heard the possibility of "tornadic activity" on the radio just now.

But considering how much rainfall we've gotten, the fact that it's been slow and steady has resulted in relatively few minor problems with mudslides or power outages. At least so far. But the ground is certainly saturated by now.
