Aloha: keep an eye on the pin. If it's stainless steel (rare for a safety pin), you can probably leave it in during laundry, and not have to deal with static during drying, either. If it's nickel-plated steel, not so much. Nickel-plated brass would probably be okay, too.
In high school I used a safety pin to "repair" a hole in a pocket of my jeans. I discovered a few washings later that it had rusted. Fortunately it was on the pocket, so not a big deal.
