sorry I haven't posted for a while.
I've been reading through my outdoors collection.
one thing i noticed about first aid gear is that despite all the different suggestions on kit they all seem to come up with the same basic items to add for a personal or small group fak in the outdoors. for say a days hillwalking.
we know the first rule of first aid is the abc.
for those that are interested heres the basic list.

1 triangular bandage
1 or 2 large wound dressings
assorted adhesive bandages
2 or 3 gauze or melolin pads 2in by 2in or 4in by 4in
antiseptic of some kind (wipes, iodine etc)
1 crepe bandage
surgical gloves
cpr barrier
scissors/ emt shears
1 gauze role 2 or 3 in
high factor sun block
asprin

heres the other suggestd safety items.
survival bag
water (essential anyway)
whistle
emergency rations (choclate, mint cake etc)
matches or lighter
small knife
pencil and waterproof note book
torch with spare batteries
spare clothing

this list is for an outdoors trip in the uk
all comments are welcome

I have seen this list in publications in the US as the minimum recommended outdoor suggested FAK items when camping, hiking, or whatever activity you will be doing. The only difference as far as I can tell is the inclusion of splinter forceps. I believe the group who actually came up with the suggested basics from which others continually copy is the Wilderness Medical Associates in Colorado, USA. At least as far as the FAK items are concerned. The remainder looks like what has been referred to the 10 essentials. In the September issue of Backpacker magazine the 10 essentials list was given a makeover. This was previously discussed already on the forum . I believe the makeover actually expands the list based on a systems type approach rather than just 10 items.
