In a survival situation a good nights sleep cannot be underestimated. One for the BOB or not?

Pretty trivial. Anything makes a good pillow such that one can get a good night's sleep. The down would be better utilized in a warm garment of some sort.

That pillow is certainly expensive but is really the only one I could find which was light enough I could really justify to take along in a BOB. Too pricey for me as well. I'm currently using a full sized cotton covered duck down pillow I found on sale for about $25. It isn't as light weighing in at around 18oz.

I've tried all sorts of pillow solutions including a down jacket or other clothing stuffed into a Thermarest Stuff Sack Pillow etc but in the end I have found that a full sized pillow is much more comfortable allowing much more undisturbed sleep during the night. But with comfort comes a weight penalty as always.

A roomier sleeping bag also helps. Many of the mummy designs although very efficient thermally restrict movement so I'm also currently using a lightweight square shaped down bag during the summer months.

Having a warm secure and comfortable sleep system allows recovery from the previous days excitement.

It took me about ummm....two nights to get used to using my elbow as a pillow. Even to the point where when I get in a bed with a pillow, I toss it on the floor.

To me a bug out bag is default too heavy if it included a dedicated pillow, no matter how light it is.

If a person really needs a pillow, and $185 is not too dear, that is certainly a nice one to get. Not so much if you don't really need a pillow or the price seems too dear.

Camping and hiking I never bring a pillow. In the heat I sleep without one and it seems cooler. Other times I roll up a towel, jacket, spare clothes to make a workable pillow. Generally I'm tired enough after a day in the field that I'm out like a light and the deficiencies of my field-expedient pillow make no difference.

REI has several backpacking pillows here. You spec'd full-size. Take a look at their NEMO pillow. Says expands to full-size pillow, but packs down to smaller than 1-liter bottle. 10.8 oz ... for lot less than $185.

When I first saw the thread, I thought A_F_L_M was putting us on.

But maybe not. When I was younger, I never bothered with a separate pillow while camping; the idea was laughable. But as I get older and considerably less flexible, I take a pillow when I can. Not backpacking (yet) but definitely for a base camp or car camp.

Sleep is health and energy. Sleep gives resilience to deal with adversity.

Besides which, without a pillow, I snore like a grizzly. Loud enough to make people killin' mad. That makes it a survival tool.
