I did not anticipate I would grow so fond of this place when I found it a few months ago. And since I'm unable to keep my mouth shut I've even posted on some topics dear to my heart. After lurking I figured it is highly overdue that I introduce myself: Howdy, I'm Mostly Harmless and hope you won't mind me saying that I find myself at home in this forum.
My primary reason for being here is my love for outdoor activities and the will to conduct those in a manner that enables me to not only survive, but have a good time doing it. I want to have a good time outdoors, even when things don't go according to plan. Survive with style, so to speak... I love skiing, cycling, canoeing (especially rapids), camping all year round - basically all fun things that takes place outside.
After more than 30 years of outdoor experience I still consider myself a novice at the things I do. Being busy at work and with to small kids I always think I spend too little time outdoors. We have a very strong family tradition of Sunday hikes, the hike being everything from finding a nice playground in our neighborhood to a wilderness exploration. You don't walk far with a 5 year and a 2 year old, but that is not our goal. The best part is to sit down, lit a fire and eat all the goodies before the kids explore whatever is around them. You don't have to walk far to achieve that.
My own safety conduct is best summarized in
the Norwegian mountain code. I've grown up with that code - each year around easter time (spring break) it is perpetually repeated on the radio, TV and in the paper. Which is probably why Doug Ritter's articles and this forum appealed so much to me. I've learned a lot lurking about here, and what I've learned has led me to respect that code even more...
