Mine arrived today. Love it - thanks!

The included guidance from Doug on assembling a survival kit is itself worth some $$.

Especially to anyone new to this arena.

Doug - is there a book on the horizon?

Total survival symmetry: the gear and the guide.

I'd like a guide that's designed to be kept in a car. Something that could have helped the woman and her son in Death Valley last week as well as the late-James Kim and his family a couple years ago when they got stuck in the snow in Oregon.

Something between the playing card-sized survival tips and a bulky book.

It could be packaged in a folded garbage bag/tarp/poncho.

:-)

There are tons of books on survival, some good, some not so good. As a forum we have an enormous range of experience, cultural and environmental differences so one book is never going to please everyone. What I would like to suggest is not new, but a take on disaster/emergency/first aid flip charts that many commercial (just saw one the other day at Wal Mart), schools and other end-users develop for quick reference on what to do in a disaster/emergency. I am sure many of you have seen, used or perhaps even helped develop these flow charts. They tend to be general in approach, but serve to jog the old memory banks into some form of constructive action.

speaking of books and the info in them..some tips are timeless like making a shelter from a small tipped over pine tree or the basic's for a pocket kit--matches,candle,fish hooks and so on but in a pocket book with that good advice, more of a thin 35 page guide,by Tim Kneeland who was a survival instructor back in the 80's i found this advice.
backpackers and the like should NOT carry PLB's. known as ELT's back then--emergency locator transmitters--because it would jeapardize the reliability of a aviation and maritime rescue tool.
