I once asked the maker of the Aurora for a Mg % so I could assess whether I thought it was significantly greater before trying one (buying one), but they were not willing to share trade secrets.
I have an Aurora(both the fire starter and the Bark River knife
)...
I was a bit disappointed when I tried it, as I could barely get any sparks from it... I promptly replaced the striker with the improved one(I think carbide), and did not see much improvement.
I tried another striker and it works GREAT!
You get big bouncing sparks that just keep burning(Just like you often get with the BlastMatch).
Both strikers that I have for the Aurora seem a bit DULL.
They talk a lot about designing it so that it would last a long time, but I think they went a bit overboard in this case.
I have been considering taking a diamond stone and touching up the edge on the improved striker and see if that makes it work better.
It is possible that my technique is a bit off, as it feels awkward using the built in striker, so maybe I just need to practice a bit more with it.
If you are anywhere near the coast, the Aurora is just about your only choice, as it is the only one that is completely water proof.
