I am looking to perchase a new compass. At the moment I own and use a Stetsco? small baseplate compass that was given to me a while back and probly cost about £5, and is not satisfactory, and a British mark 1 marching compass which is about 30 years old, probably, and is extremely heavy. I would like to buy a clear baseplate compass with a magnifying lens, clear accurate reading and in degrees. I would also like the price to be below £15. Any ideas?

Thanks

silva ranger 3 £14ish, or recta romer 310 £13ish. i'm currently using a ranger 3 and it's more than adequate for anything i need here in the peak district.
just as matter of interest, why isn't the one you've got at the moment satisfactory?

take it easy,
stuart.

its got cracks in the baseplate and the needle won't settle. Also the degree markings are in 5 degree intervals and there isn't a satisfactory line between the north on the bezel and on the base plate.

I agree with Stu, the Silva is a good buy. I actually use an Expedition 4 that costs about £21, but the Ranger 3 is pretty much the same. I've had mine for about 6 years now and its still going strong. The previous two Suunto's that I owned both developed bubbles at an early stage.

I bought the silva 4 compass for £19.99, which is £6 less than the RRP. I havn't used it yet but it looks good. The needle settles very quickly and stays steady.
