Interesting article on the Popular Mechanics website.

One hundred years of technological progress can be erased in minutes by nature's fury. Recent disasters have left not only destruction, but also heroism in their wake, and we can learn from the experiences of the survivors. The right tools, skills and mind-set—the survival worldview—will help you withstand the worst.

Interesting. But personally, I don't think that it is possible to survive "anything" that Mom Nature can dish out. She can kick your butt if she really wants to...

The best way to survive anything is to be somewhere else when anything arrives.

Some people in general will survive in any disaster, but you can’t 100% guarantee you will survive any one event.

Moving out of the effected area if you have warning is good, but I suppose you could get killed in an accident while in transit.

We all here try to lay in food, water and supplies to up our chances, and for the most part it works. Dumbing down your skills and tools is good to do, and to plan on not being tied to all the wonderful things that makes life comfortable is good. This along with a good positive mindset and the ability to adapt on the fly will give us an edge many will not have. But if the big guy upstairs decides your number is up, that’s it.

There use to be a show on (I think?) called “1900 house” where modern families would live like they were from 1900 or so, anyone remember this? Is it still on and what network was it on? I remember seeing only 1 ½ of the shows. It would be an interesting thing to see how people cope with the loss of all modern life gives us.

Reading that article in the link sounds like this show, but he didn’t say too much about it.

Never heard of it, sorry. Sounds like it could be better than the "reality" shows of today...

It was on about 2 or 3-years ago. Probably too slow and too little action to hold peoples attention today.

It was part of a series on PBS. They picked various eras and locations and tried to recreate what life was like in each.

There was the 1900 house, there was a Prairie house, a good one about living in a castle too.

Check the PBS website for more, I'm sure that at least some of the different series must be available on DVD.

Being aware of the danger is half the battle. You can respond to the potential of the threat much better than the threat itself, because you have time, time to relocate, or time to deploy resources. Like the man in the article said, he had talked about the possibility of tornados, and had evaluated his environment and come up with an effective plan. Adequate forewarning allowed most folks the opportunity to save themselves, even though their whole town was demolished around them.
