Hmmm...the one and only time I returned a Craftsman ratchet, I got a brand new one off the shelf but that was at a Sears store, can't recall the last time I was in a KMart.

I took the ratchet back to Sears, not K-Mart. Sears gave me the used rebuilt ratchet.

I did have a brand new Craftsman chain saw die on me, got a brand new one in exchange. But my daughter worked in the store (Sears), and her future husband did the exchange paperwork for me. That might have helped a bit...
They want to cut corners this way they loose me as a customer.
No kiddin'. I have always purchased Craftsman tools because they were so liberal on the return policy, not because the quality was all that great. If they are starting to get stingy on the guarantee, they will likely lose a good number of customers.
