FYI - I just read a post on a tropical fish mailing list I subscribe to that Potassium Permanganate can be found at Sears by the water softeners. What it's used for, I don't know. But I'm planning on checking it out next time I go there.

BTW, it was one of several recommendations on how to treat a real severe fungal infection on a fish.

Willie Vannerson
McHenry, IL

I just found it on www.sears.com

It's sears #04234415000. A 6 oz. bottle sells for $4.99. It's used for manually regenerating the filter used for water treatment to remove iron.

Willie Vannerson
McHenry, IL

Be extremely cautious using KMnO4. It causes severe burns when in contact with the skin. I see no advantage in it's use over other agents for water purification or other agents for disinfection in general.

Jeffery S. Anderson, M.D.

Also be aware of any local or state laws as to its possession, as it is used in the manufacture of some illegal narcotics.

Ted Fisher
VCSAR

I have read it is a good anti-fungal solution. Burning the skin must be in the undiluted form. It used to be in the old Boy Scout kits so it must be safe. It would be interesting to know the extended use limitations of the most widely used water purifiers, chlorine, iodine, potassium permanganate.
