What type of stones am I to look for to start my fire? I don't think it's the big stones in my driveway. Do I just find several stones and strike them together to see if they spark? All I need is the spark.

Thanks!

I apologize for the limited details of my request.

More so you are looking for a stone that will cause a spark with steel.

They key is the steel striker. High carbon is usually better.

I think carbon steel will spark with just about anything. Deflate the tires on your car then drive it around on various grades of road if you don’t believe me. (Car comment not specifically towards you, Jace… until you are old enough to drive, that is! laugh )

Unless he meant steal knife, start fire... Sort of a list of fun things to do. ;-)

Hard stones that will chip off tiny pieces of the iron. Quartzite,
Chirt, Flint etc.

If you get one of the mish-metal strikers you can use most anything
hard, brass keys, stainless steel knives etc.

If you just want to use stones you need iron pyrite and flint. The pyrite needs to be very fine-grained, not the large-grained stuff sold at museums.

In the past I have, on occasion, whacked two rocks together and created a spark. But I have no idea what those rocks were. I would guess that one "special" rock and a piece of steel would be morebetter. Now, if I only knew how to find a "special" rock...

Hey, Thanks for the many replies. I was looking for just using two stones (knowing very little of what I was asking.) I have both versions of the Light My Fires and they have served me well over the years. At our August campout in Northern Michigan, I always try to light the first fire using a different method. Stones were chosen for this August.

Thanks again for all the replies and the links. I appreciate it!

Michael
