Anyone know of a source for something like this?

I'm looking for a tube that the diameter is bigger then a pencil, but at the same time securely hold liquid. Ideally, I would like to be able to customize the length, but its not a deal breaker.

Google searching keeps bringing up the Keep2Go tubes!!!!

ideas?

could you make your own? Does it have to be hard or can it be flexible? If flexible maybe you could go get some tubing the size you want and make a cap? Also you could maybe find some really small pvc pipes at the hardware store, thats were I would look.

What do you want it for??

I like centrifuge tubes. They come in of bunch of sizes with watertight lids.

I'm building up a psk and was looking for a way to store 100% deet. Don't need and have no room for a 4oz bottle, and where I usually go 100% deet is what you need to help keep the mozzies at bay. I really don't like the wipes and haven't been able to find ones that are 100%.

I was thinking of using straws and setting them up for single use (2-3 inches long, which would contain a good amount of deet). But I don't have anything at home that I can use to safely 'melt' the ends of the straw to make a proper seal.

I like blast's idea about the centrifuge tubes... but 500 to a case? All i need is one... well, probably 10 or so.

We (the lab) have both polypropylene and polycarbonate 15ml centrifuge tubes with screw on lids, but I really do not know if they will withstand 100% DEET.

Or just the nalgene tubes and vials they sell at REI - smaller than 4 oz, hold liquid pretty well.

Make you own out of plastic straws. You can seal the ends by cutting off about a 1/4 inch from the end of the straw. Then bent the end of the straw back on itselfs and then put the bent over end into the 1/4 ring of straw that you cut off.

Don't forget that DEET is a very effective solvent. It will melt some types of plastic.

It might be worth it to buy some stuff from the dollar store and test it first.

Personally, I'd want something really bulletproof like real Nalgene bottles -- and then I'd put that in a Ziplock. I hate having containers of stuff like that break and get all over my stuff.

Nalgene bottles are available down to 1oz .

Small glass vials might be OK too.

You could try a mining supplies store. They store gold flakes in small vials.

I don't know if they have any that are waterproof. You could call and ask. Homepage for The Lifestyle Store: http://www.lifestylestore.com

I think they would be. When I used to pan for gold, we'd put the flakes in one of those micro vials with water because it was impossible to get them all in without washing them in.

For deet, get the single pack wipes. Saves the hassle, and the issue of having one of these tubes open up on you.

Hi Kris,

I have used plastic tubelike containers for the 100% Deet Bug Dope in my Medium Size Patrol Pack Kit. The tubes look like the "Centifuge Tubes" that Blast posted but have treaded screw-on tops. I got them from work where we use them for wildlife DNA samples. I have some at the house but the box they came from is at my District Office 100 miles away so I cannot tell you the brand name. I will PM you the brand name next time I see the box.

Could you use the MRE Tabasco bottle? Would check to make sure that the deet didn't melt the plastic cap.

I use a mini Tabasco bottle for holding a spare charge of lighter fluid (naptha) for my zippo. And thank you to whoever posted that on this forum some time ago.

Thats not bad! Wish there was a Walmart around here. Wouldn't fix with what i'm currently planning, but that would be perfect for my larger PSK.

From Checklists, Edition 62
Outdoor, Travel, and Emergency Preparedness Checklists

"WARNING: More plastic coated equipment (knife and tool handles), synthetics (Gore-tex, polar fleece, nylon with waterproof coating), painted/laquereed finishes (bikes, lighters), leather (driving/shooting gloves, handlebar wraps), rubber (gloves, grips, wraps) and plastic ware (like compasses, GPS cases, iPod/music devices, and eating ware) has been ruined by DEET than by animals or rough handling. The contents of DEET or its dispensing agent dissolves synthetic materials. Even when the DEET container is double bagged in plastic zipper locked bags, after traveling for a while, the DEET container/bottle seems to leak and the storage bags seem to acquire at least one tiny hole which allows the liquid to get out. It is wise to try to carry DEET at the lowest point in a bag / pannier / box / container. This is particularly more of a problem on Bicycles and ATVs as they tend to have many more bounces per minute than other forms of transportation (thus a higher risk factor for causing both a DEET container leak and a puncture in the outer container/bag)."

Picaradin comes as close as I've seen. The only US brand I've seen for it is Cutter Advanced. I tried it last year, and I'm using it this year. No damage to nylon that I can detect- I've got some nylon scraps in a mason jar, along with a heavy blast of picardin. Hasn't weakened in a year, I'm going to call it good. smile

What it doesn't to much with is ticks, but I keep a peice of flea/tick collar in the laces of my boots.

Yeah, the picaradin is new to me. The GoReady brand has that in addition to DEET. The 20% is relatively new to the US.

According to the Medical Letter, it seems to be as effective as DEET without the plastic munching appetite of DEET.
