Did groceries this morning, and decided to pick up a favorite of mine from when I was a kid- Halvah. For those who don't know it, it is a sesame-based candy/cookie/paste/confection- it has a unique texture.

Got it home, and a then looked at the nutritional info for the first time in my life. This is for a 3.5oz, two-serving "king size" bar:

cal 340 (200 from fat)
0 Trans Fats
105mg Sodium
16g carbs (fiber 2g, sugars 9g)
4g protien
8%DV iron

I'd call it about 7-7/5" long, and an inch square. Looks like it is good for a year, based on the only date code being 00918 (2009, week 18?). Kosher for those keeping track, no fridge needed, doesn't melt, isn't all that thirst provoking. And under $2. Not perfect, but one I rebuild the foods in my BoB, I might slip one of these in there.

EDIT: Forgot to tell you where to find it. :P If you have a kosher foods section in you supermarket, look there. Or go to a kosher deli.

Halvah is awesome. Fills you right up and tastes great, too!

Halvah is something I hadn't considered but I'll look for it today. The fat content looks like it would provide a long slow burn -- that's a good thing.

I think that would be a great addition.

Although, you would need to see it's behaviour in both hot and cold weather. Meaning, if it gets runny like a candy bar in summer temps, or iron hard in winter.

And, do you think it will be an attractant for insects/animals?

All through the eastern Med and Adriatic region, actually. But that's why I know halvah and kinisihes... haven't had a good one of those in a decade....

Now I'm hungry.

another good idea for a ration..but i would suggest that you
don't depend on or load up on just one kind.a week of halvah
or any other sort of food will get old real quick and the whole
psych issue behind a meal has been well studyed by the military
which is why they put an assortment of stuff in the MRE and
emergency rations..

SPANISH RICE AGAIN!!!!!!

even on a well fed, clean shirt,no sweat canoe tripping
vacation a fourth repeat on the menu sort of takes the
edge off a meal---

Don't worry, the ants are edible to. :P

I store my food in a lock-n-lock, nalgene or in soft case, double freezer bagged. Never had many problems with ants so long as the outsides were clean.
