hi everyone!

I'm new here, just introducing myself. My boyfriend(shaggystu) is addicted to this site and suggested I join. I'm just starting to get into camping, walking, caving and general outdoorsy things.

however, I wasn't into survival skills and the like til i metstuart, so consequently I've not read all the 'standard texts'. but over the months I've been looking at the posts on the site i've been thinking that maybe some people become so obsessed by what is 'right', according to reviews and the latest literature that sometimes people may fail to look at it objectively and use a bit of common sense. so i guess that's what I am really, an 'uncorrupted mind' as of yet, a 'lay person' to bounce ideas off. for example having never read a single survival text in my life, I still managed to have every item (except needle and thread!!) on an 'essential personal items' list compiled by stu.

so I hope it's ok that an 'outsider' has infiltrated, but hopefully I've got something helpful to offer.

speak to you soon,

luv doozer

Doozer,
Welcome! If you have the (un)common sense to be well prepared enough to have a complete EDC without much reading (other than the posts here) then you are very well ahead of the curve. OTOH, I have found that women tend to naturally carry more of the ten essentials than men (especially if they are moms) . Perhaps it is because women are culturally expected to carry some lugage with them while men are not. I would find my edc much enlarged if I could get away with carrying a purse without comment from my coworkers. As it is I get trouble just wearing a bulky key chain and leatherman. I work in a professional office environment.

Anyway - welcome and glad you're here

aaaaargh!!!!!!!!!! a spy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
women eh? can't get away from them anywhere
for those of you are interested, the "essential personal items" list that my dearly beloved is referring to is the urban survival kit listed by lofty wiseman in his urban survival handbook, plus the obvious modern addition of a mobile (cellular) phone, more or less a basic EDC.
welcome to the forum babe.

take it easy,
stuart.

Croeso Doozer

I'm not really Welsh but I live along the M4 from you. I know we don't have the wilderness our North American cousins have but there's a lot of fun to be hand around here. Even more if I didn't have to go to work on grand days like today, made for spending on the Beacons. As for the outsider business, I don't suspect anyone was born here, 'cept maybe Chris K!

Howdy Doozer! I hope Stuart reciprocates by immersing himself in one of your passions ( no luv, the crochet needle goes THIS way.) And no Justin, I'm a standard issue American. I did meet HRH at a horse show once. I bowed, which drew the ire of my sunshine patriot friends. I had to explain I was giving honor to the head of my church and not the queen. Your church? Yes, C of E. C of what? Thankfully, my class was called and I had to drive a horse before damaging that institution beyond all hope

By "born here", Chris I was referring to the forum, not the UK, since Doozer was worried about being an outsider on the forum. It's my experience that whilst we all start of as newbies, the outsider thing doesn;t really happen here. Now try moving to a small Welsh Valley's village if you want to know about being an outsider.

A visitors comments:

I have been in Snowdonia and did some rescue boat training in Menai Strait and the seas around. What a country Wales is. The mountains are not higher than 1800 feet but they are dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Suddenly mist comes in and you either fall or freeze:) That is the place where the SAS do their training and that training is a real hard one as far as I am told.

Meani Strait is very narrow and when the tide rushes in and out the current runs around 18 knots sometimes. That is fun if you are on a RIB and doing training in the whirpools by the legs of the Menai bridge.

Wales is great for outdoor sports and excellent people live there, try Plas Menai training centre for fun.

Cheers,
Burak

hello doozer. Nice to meet another female in this forum. Welcome. By the way, I know this is a late late reply to you but I just found it when I was searching for something else.
