flashman,

Concentrate in the survival priorities, wich are:

1- Water: you can't have enough of stored water; a human can barely survive 3 days w/o drinking water; you must also have water storage and treatment means, like water treatment pills or a portable filter. Boiling does not garantee that your water becomes safe to drink.

2- shelter: make your home your fortress; prepare to defend it if necessary; hide.

3- food: store non-perishable food; prefer food that requires minimum water to preparation.

4- first aid: don't forget your first-aid gear.

5- tools: depends on your needs and your plan; the basics: something to cut, something to hammer, something to start a fire with, something to give you light.

6- at last but not the least: a PLAN! prepare accordingly, but expect the inexpected.

Knowledge is a weightless treasure.

"Boiling does not guarantee that your water becomes safe to drink." I suppose this is logically true, since boiling will not purify water contaminated with arsenic or other heavy metals. But for the usual biological conaminants like bacteria and viruses, boiling is the best way to go. No water treatment pill or filter will protect as effectively as boiling against the total range of biological contaminants. I am a fan of boiling since I have effectively purified some very nasty water sources with it.

However, boiling does have its drawbacks. It takes a long time, especially for large quantities. In some situations, fire may not be an option for safety reasons. So it is prudent to have some other options - my prefered backup is a filter. Iit is fast, and the water is still cool when you are done. But be sure you know what agents you are trying to defeat.

Since your planning to hunker down at home, one of those rechargable battery packs (often called Jump Starters) can be handy. They have cigarette lighter plugs, and can be used to power small 12V appliances, recharge cell phones, and with an invertor power small AC devices. Usually sold in automotive sections. The more "amp hours" the better.
