... for slotted cardboard used to make 3D forms? The simplest is the interior of a box that holds a dozen wine bottles. The cardboard is slotted halfway on each section and joined together.

Is there a term for this? Some years ago, I ran across an article in a magazine where a man created figures and animals using this method. I tried googling various terms, but not much comes up.

Does anyone have any ideas what it would be called, if such a term even exists?

No, it doesn't have anything to do with survival, but the people here are the brightest I know, and if YOU don't know what it's called, no one probably does.

I'd say Art hit the nail on the head. That's what it would be called in a wood project anyway.

If you really want an answer to this question, there are two universities in the U.S. that really teach packaging. One of them is Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ. An email to someone there might give you the answer.

Maybe try uline - they sell shipping supplies. Or try calling a winery that ships their products.

Try interlocking cardboard or interlocking puzzle. I usually see small dinosaur puzzles using this method, not too many out of cardboard like this one.

I know exactly what you're describing, because in college my roommate made a half-lifesize 3d rhino from corrugated cardboard. A half-lifesize rhino is still pretty large, it was the size of a small horse, and sat in our living room for about a year. I think it probably weighed about 50 lbs or more. I was always tempted to hop on and take a picture.

Maybe try "origami cardboard" in Google if you haven't already.

'Half-lap joints' only seem to pertain to woodworking, and it doesn't seem to be the same.

'Cardboard dividers' doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Uline says they're called 'egg crate dividers', but they don't know why, unless that's how they used to separate eggs before the day of the molded carton.

'Interlocking puzzles or cardboard' doesn't go anywhere, and those thin wooden dinosaurs are the only things I can find.

There is an old book on 'slotted cardboard', so maybe that's all there is.

Thanks for the ideas.

Sue

I think "egg crate dividers" or 'egg crate construction' carries the idea across. Might not be the most apt or correct terminology but I have used it describing similar constructions and everyone seemed to pick up on what I meant.
