Exactly. Sooner or later you have to tell people, sorry, I can't help any more. Where that line is probably varies for everyone. That's why I said tough choices would have to be made, and lived with afterwards.

I guess my thought is that once I've done what I can to assure my family's survival, I could look into helping out the local groups that try to prepare for the "hordes" - food pantries, the local Red Cross, the local Salvation Army, etc.

Can you even tell where the line is, until its too late?

In my case the answer was "No, you can't". After passing out all the spare gas we had to help stranded Rita evacuees we encountered a car with four ancient ladies in it. The youngest was in her late seventies and they were out of gas. I decided between our Honda Pilot and RAV4, both with filled tanks, I could spare them the gasoline I was keeping aside for my unleaded gas Coleman stove. I thought if I needed the stove to cook I could just siphon some gas from one of the SUV's. Well, later when I went to siphon the gas I discovered I couldn't. They both have blocks on the gas tanks to prevent this. D'oh!! I should have know this.

Most fuel tanks will have a drain plug you can remover partially, allowing fuel to drain into a container blow. I would suggest that you not smoke while this is going on. Some tanks will have a sheet metal "skid pan" thingy covering the bottom of the tank that you will have to remove to get at the drain plug...

It has been a few (OK, quite a few) model years since I last drained a gas tank via the drain plug, maybe they don't put plugs in tanks anymore...
