Looking to see what portion of users are threaded vs. flat view. There's 4 choices. Threaded because it was the default (and you didn't know you could change), threaded by choice (why view multiple posts at once?), flat because it came that way (it's how it was dished out), or flat by choice (I like seeing multiple messages on a single page - it saves time).

You forgot an option: a combination of both. If I want to read straight through a new thread I read it in flat mode. If I want to see how people are responding to each other or I'm looking for either the newest post or a specific post I read it threaded.

I use both also. New threads flat, old threads threaded.

Well, I prefer the threaded, but so many people are using the flat that their replies are not following the thread so I have to switch to flat mode a lot. So I'm not sure which to vote for since I have to switch back and forth all the time now.

I use Flat. In fact I had to change it back to Flat the other day because it reverted Threaded.

I visit the site roughly once a week, and then make an effort to become current. This has the benefit that clicking on a thread title takes me to the first unread message in the thread, and it's easy to see all the new stuff. Since the upgrade a few months ago (and getting my own broadband modem replaced) bandwidth hasn't been a problem for me.

Generally the threading structure isn't important. If it matters, I can generally figure it out from the author names, if necessary clicking on them. (The "re: author" part of the post title links to the post being replied to. I'm guessing not everyone realises that.)

My reply was "Flat Mode by Choice" simply because that's the way I got used to forums being. My previous experiences with vBulletin, phpBB, Simple Machines Forum (SMF) (my favorite), and others have not had a "threaded" view (by default anyway). The threaded mode seems to stem from newsgroups and the like, in my opinion.

Mailing lists have threaded support provided you use a real (non Microsoft client).

either mode would work fine for me provided the new posts function actually worked right. Since the forum upgrade the new posts only shows the most recent post and not all new posts since I last visited. So I get one post at the end of 10 that came since last time and then have to hunt for the previous 10 to figure out whats going on.

Flat mode for me...it's just plain easier.

I agree with Themalemutekid, Flat is just easier/quicker to use.

I have always prefered Threaded. But with this latest update, once again I see little buff colored folders all the time, the only way I can tell which ones are new is by looking at the extreme right to see if something was posted today, or whenever. No big thing if I get to check in every day, but if I miss a few days I have to start keeping track of dates. Why don't I have white folders for posts I have already read, the way it was before this latest "update"???

(I am beginning to think update means a giant leap backwards)

I've never been quiet about my preference for threaded (thanks Spinnr, for doing this).

Right now it is looking like at least 10% of the users like threaded. But it is still a significant portion of the users. And even if it wasn't, the software glitches are still there- even if only .001% of us used that mode, glitches in one place means there are glitches someplace else.

No problem - I wanted to see how many people were affected by the Threaded problem that seems to have reared it's ugly head w/ this last "upgrade". Between user feedback and the stats program, flat seems to be a majority, but not an exclusivity.
